Above and Beyond is an English electronic music group consisting of members Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki. Formed in 2000, they are the owners of London-based electronic dance music labels Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep, and also host a weekly radio show titled Group Therapy Radio.
Miloco Builds were approached in January 2013 to look into the possibility of a new build studio close to their label facility. Acoustician Nick Whitaker was also appointed and the initial planning between developer Acorn and Miloco began to ensure that the crucial sound reinforcement of the new structure was correctly conceived to ensure protection from a studio predominantly making dance music from the residents of Bermondsey.
By July 2013 the shell was in place and the Miloco Builds team began on site. The first stage was to float a new concrete floor across the entire basement floor, carefully decoupling each area so that the main control room could work independently from the vocal booth / Studio 2 from where the band would also broadcast their radio show.
Whilst the studio design and acoustic treatment was all designed with Nick Whitaker, it soon became clear that choosing a colour for the room was going to be a moot point and so the band appointed Lee Associates to design a scheme for the whole facility.
The results speak for themselves. Whilst it is the first monochrome studio we have built the overall feel is very relaxing and we have, in essence, created a “man cave”, which was the brief the band had given us. Working with Denise from Lee Associates was a pleasure, and whilst I initially had my reservations I think the studio is fabulous.
Denise was involved in the oak monitor wall which provides both diffusion and aesthetic warmth as well as housing the ATC monitor system
Finn Eiles oversaw the av installation including a UPS power backup system with all band members’ computers connected to a fixed IP enabling them to log into the studio to do recalls / mixes from wherever they are in the world. This helps them manage their busy DJ schedules with the creative process of being a band.
The final touch was the installation of a Bosendorfer Piano which is located in the lounge area, but the provision of tie lines, additional isolation and a bespoke steel / carbon weave screen makes it a perfect recording area as well.
"What can I say? Pete and the Miloco Builds team brilliantly balanced the band's unswerving demand for audio excellence with an innovative interior design brief from Lee Associates. It looks amazing. Cheers guys." Steve Heaver, Involved Management
